Low Country artist Eileen Power

Painting, for me, is instinctive, personal and above all, truthful . The dialogue begins with the first mark on the surface. The shapes are pulled from experience. A rhythm is created with gestural and calligraphic marks. It is my wordless expression of emotions and thoughts.
Painting provides me the opportunity to communicate with “The Big Creator” each day. Abstract painting gets me into the conversation even quicker. There is a point in each painting when order slips away and chaos ensues. This is the time when the dialogue between creator with a little “c” and my Partner begins.

Most of my abstract work is drawn from nature. I work outside creating small studies with charcoal, graphite and crayon. These studies then are taken to the studio and further developed on a larger surface. I allow small glimpses of my first passage to be visable in the finished painting. This allows the viewer to experience the history of the work. Just as we all have a personal history, be it painter or viewer, the painting also has a history.

I work from my home studio in Atlanta and Kiawah Island, SC. Both locations provide me the sense of space and light important to my paintings.
